Tainted Milk Powder Sickens Chinese Babies

From my colleague Lin Yang, a look at the latest tainted food scandal to hit China:

The disclosure in a Chinese newspaper last week that kidney stones among babies may have been caused by tainted milk powder has touched off a wave of finger pointing and an eerie since of deja vu. Hundreds of sick babies and at least one death have been linked to milk powder produced by the Sanlu Group. The slow official response—a recall was announced more than a month after the problem was discovered—is making people lose faith. There is no official explanation of why the powder was allowed in the market even after questions were raised or why the authorities did not reply to the initial inquiries of the worried parents.

Chinese officials suspect the milk powder is tainted with melamine, a chemical used in fertilizers and plastics. It is sometimes added to animal feed to boost its apparent protein content, a practice the government banned last year amid an international furor about the safety of Chinese-made products. Animal feed from China that contained melamine is suspected of poisoning thousands of pets in the U.S. last year. Chinese-made milk powder has also proven dangerous in the past. In 2004, at least 13 babies died in eastern China after being fed milk that was made from powder containing little or no nutritional value.

As news of the latest incident emerged last week, indignant posts have flooded Internet bulletin boards, ridiculing the official statements and calling for self-organized actions to investigate the incident. There are also devastated parents across the country leaving contact information on the Internet, trying to find help and support from each other. “I have been crying so hard that I can hardly catch my breath,” wrote one mother. “I’ve seen bloody spots on my baby’s diaper but the doctor only told me to feed him more water. I feel so helpless. I will not demand a refund; I do not want any compensation. Just please, I’m praying to heaven, let my baby be ok!” Medicine might be enough to restore the sick babies to health, but it will take more than that to restore the public’s trust.

I thought the manufacturer was so bad when I first heard of this piece of news. It is because it can make someone die. Why can they do it like this? Are they do not know it is so danger? I think the children who drink this milk and the manufacturer affected by this scandal. Now, we can donate some money to the casualty. Because we can help them to pay the money of their operation. Now, we do not allusion this scandal. Everyone does not want this kind of thing happen. We should think about the method to solve the problem.

Reflection:
When I first heard of this piece of news, I thought the people who produce these types of milk powder are bad because they have made something that affect the people. In this case, I think baby is affected by this scandal most because they always drink milk. Other than baby, I think foreigners may also be affected because the milk powder will export to other country. I think the producer should give back the victims the money of buying and going to see doctors. I think we should donate some money to them.

When I first heard of this piece of news that about the tainted milk powder, It immediately shook my heart. Base on the newspaper, kidney stones among babies may have been caused by tainted milk powder. Moreover, most of the babies have drunk this brand of milk powder because this brand is a famous company , it means lots of babies maybe affected .

However, many people are affected by this tragedy besides the babies. Businessmen lost a lot of money; the government’s image was hurt. Besides them, many people lost their confidence to the Chinese products, I afraid that the Chinese economic system will be hurt. I think it will be a really big problem for China.

In my opinion, the Sanlu Company should compensate all the medical fees for the victims at least and responsible to treat all the sick babies until they recovered to health completely. Of course, we all do not want this tragedy happened, but now I think we should believe the government will handle this tragedy probably and we should give support and care for the victims with love.

1) I was shocked when I first heard of this piece of news. It is terrible.
It hurts many babies. I think the government of China have not done
any improvement, because it has occurred an similar accident a few
years ago.
2) A lot of people affected by this scandal such as the babies and parents
in this case. However, China was abashed. The other countries will
loss their confidence for China’s products.
3) I think the company should make the indemnify to the victims. Also,
they should be responsibility. They must make the promise that they
are going to improve and do well.
4) We should be objective. Moreover, I think China did wrongly in
this event.

It is a miserable incident. I’m feeling so disappointed and upset when i first heard about this piece of news. Also, i’m feeling really sorry about those babies that have been sick and even…died from this incident. It’s such a terrible tragedy and a dreadful disaster.

As a matter of fact, the serious fault of this company is a reflection upon all the other companies and products which is ‘made in China’, also, customers will quickly lose thier confidence to them. What a shame! The company definitely should compensate to the buyers of thier uncountable loss and hurt.

It’s so horrible.

Comment by Lo Wing Chun, Mikael(2C28)

1. When I first heard of this news, I was astonished, and I didn’t believe in it. Many countries are serious of the health of public, but it’s a shame in China that the governors who even knew that the powder is harmful to the infants, but also ignore it and allow Sanlu Group to sell it.

2. In this incident, the babies and their parents are the most innocent. Moreover, the Chinese government also was affected, because many countries think that Chinese is a super country, but the scandal make the faith in China lose. And the people lose the confidence of Chinese products.

3. I think that money and the medicine fee should be compensated by Sanlu Group, besides government should provide a better living environment for them, for example, the water should be clean, arrest the bad governor in the villages, and ensure that the food is harmless, it is the best compensation for them.

4. In my opinion, I think that government should spend more source to make sure that the poor can live well, and close up the bad companies.

Comment by Choi Chi Hin

When I heard this terrible news, I was thinking that why could the producer like that. That shooked my head. The babies and parents must the most affected people. And also, that comapany will be loss in this case. Not only money but its reputation. But they still need to pay for the babies, at lease twenty thousand per baby.

I think we should now choose a milk powder company with good reputation and have a ingredients to look at. So that we can proove that it is healthy with no toxic material.

When I first heard of this piece of news, I feel very surprised. I think many Chinese people were affected by this scandal. Hundreds of babies were sick in this case,. Their parents were all very worried about their babies. The busnessmen made the people not to believe them, ect.
In this case, I think money can’t be compensated. This is because it hurt the baby, so money can’t be solved in this case. I think the company and the government should think about how to let the babies can get well as quick as they can.
I think after this case, everyone will reduce the confidences of this company. Also, I think this company should say sorry to the people. Either they were being affected or not, they have to do it.

Comment by Kiko Lam2C(20)

When I first heard of this piece of news, I felt so sad, because the babies are too poor, there are 3 children dead already. i think The babies and their parents are all affected, because the babies are too little but they may die all the moment, and the parents are affected too, because they are just have a baby, but they maybe will die. and I think the Chinese producer are affected too, because the general public knew this news, and they won’t buy the milk again, so the businessmen won’t asked the producer to produce the milk anymore, then they won’t have any increase. I think the parents do not want to get any money, they just want the children back, so I think the government should find the best doctor in the world to save the children.and I think all of us should help the parents and the babies to ask the Government to find the doctors save the babies.

And also, the mothers of the babies have been very scared of this happened. Many people have lost their confidence of the Sanlu Group. Virtually, the babies and the mothers do not want to have any compensated. They just hope their babies restore. That already is their wish. Think about us, we have no any illness and pain, but still have a lot people do not cherish their lives and make it more beautiful. If we were those babies, out parents will be extremely sad and worried. Some babies born even less than 1 month. Their lives still not yet brighten. We are so commiserate with these babies and mothers.

The news shocks me and I am really disappointed to the officials. They suspected the problem long time ago but they did not take any action at once.
Besides, I am worry about the future of the Chinese peasants.Their education is poor so they may not know that adding melamine into milk would cause such an acute outcome. They may learn this method to pass the test by old farmers. Then it becomes a ‘family heritage’.

Apart from infants, mothers and the Sanlu Group, government officials and Chinese businessmen are sufferers affected by this scandal. Chinese businessmen have lost a lot of money; government officials need to be responsible for most of the problem. Moreover, Chinese loses her reputation!

In order to compensate the victums, the best way is to aviod the same situation happening. First, the government should pay the medical fee for the sick babies. Second, improve the mean to test the milk powder accurately.Third, teach farmers some relative knowledge.

We should support the sufferers to pass this scandal.

Because I cannot upload all the passage,so I put it on the next cm.
I think money is no use ,government should let some doctor to check up the boby of babies or people for free. And give the bad men a serious punishment. We can set up a department to check food is it safety and clean. Also , we can check the ingredients carefully before we buy it .

Comment by Trini or 2A (27)

My face was turned into black when I first to hear that NEWS!The milk were poisoned and the merchant sales it!I can’t believe that the milk were poisoned and the effect of them.
I think the mothers of their sons or daughters were the most affected people because the sons or the daughters of them have an accident, the one who fears the most must be their mother.
I think cure is the most useful solution instead of compensation.
I think the one who need to respond is the merchants who poisoned the milk so we need to enforce them to do some to recure the baby who was affected.

When I first heard of this piece of news,i was shocked. The selfish businessmen wanted to earn more money,so they added some toxic substance into the milk powder. This case caused many babies sick or had stones in their kidneys.Base on this serious problem,it caused many parents don’t want to buy the products of China. The tourists also doubt the qualities of China products. Also,it damaged the image of the brands of milk powder.

I think Sanlu should compensate the fee of the tainted milk powder. The hospitals of China should treat the babies free. The government of China should recycle the Sanlu milk powder and check the other brands of milk powder more frequently.

I feel a bit sad and angry when I first heard of this news. The reason of ‘a bit sad’ is I had heard this kind of new many times. I think they are greedy and don’t care about the public’ lives, but some time they are crazy because thet sometimes produce some artificial food which are cheap, of course they cannot get much money!

I believe there will be more people will affect by this scandal, including the Chinese some people from another countries, some businessmen and the reputation of the food producers’ companies. After the poor babies drink the tainted milk, they will have a bad health if they die, their parents will be sad. This scandal will deeply effect the develop for a long time. It is because this kind of news were repeated in the past many times. The people from different countries will distrust the safety of the food which were made in China, this will stop the develop of the food producers’ companies in the international market. I think the Sanlu company should pays the cost of cure the harmed people and find out the people who tainted the milk or milk powder, punish them hardly. But the most important thing is they must say sorry to all the people around the world. We should support the action of catching people who commit crimes in China because the public security there was not good. It is a serious problem.

When I heard this incident,I feel disapointed with the producer an government, they can’t helped with anythings, only suggested with money, they should helped the babies recovery from illness.
I think the hardly affected group of people are the babies and the businessmen, because babies may affected their growing, and it may cause some diseases. And why the businessmen will be affected because they needed to retrieve the milk powder,
and these powder needed to destroy, they will lost a lots money.
I think they needed to compensate $2000 to each affected family.

There are lots of people involved in this scandal. Of course, including the irresponsible Chinese merchants. And also the victims: the affected infants and parents. I am really sorry about them. I think that the harm is deep in their heart. The harm maybe never faded away .
This scandal completely destroyed the image of Chinese. The people in the other countries will not believe in the manufactures that are made of China . Comment by Susana Chin

When I first heard of this pieces of news, I feel very devastated too. Why? You can get many money from adults, why you can made the money from babies!? When I see a baby, when I see their eyes, I only hope that, they can be healthy, strong. But why they can so curel to the babies!

I think the parents are really affected by this scandal, if your baby die, what will you do? But now lucklly. The babies haven’t die, but one baby die, her/him parents will not want to live in the world to……Therefore parents and babies are really affected by this sandal.

I don’t think we can compensated anything to parents. Can you compensated a healthy baby to their parent? So now, we only have to help the doctor and help the baby, make them still alive. this is the most important things now.

They only can say sorry to everybody, they can’t do everything any more, I think they will guilt all one life.

I’d heard this news already for a hundred times already. But I didn’t know that The United States Of America had happened once on animals last year. Maybe the ones who put tainted milk powder on milk products must be the ones who also poisoned animals. I felt sad and pity for them, and I think the slow official response was to blame, it made infants sick and died. If the official response were quicker, thousands of babies would be saved.
